FAQs for Undergraduate Scholarships Tenable Overseas

For the Girdlers' Scholarship, Peter Windle Scholarship, Robertson Scholars Program, and Sir Douglas Myers Scholarship.

Applications & References

Q. Can I apply for more than one Universities New Zealand scholarship in the same year?

A. Yes

 Q. If I am applying for more than one scholarship do I have to fill out a separate application for each scholarship?

A. Yes, you need to submit a separate application for each scholarship.

Q. Can I include a CV and/or certificates in my application?

A. Please do not include a CV with your application. You can list prizes, awards and scholarships you have received in the application form. If there is not enough space on the application form you can list these on a separate page and attach it to your application. Please do not include copies of your certificates with your application; you should list these accomplishments instead.

Q. If I am applying for more than one scholarship, do my referees have to write a separate reference for each scholarship application?

A. Your referees may submit the same reference for you, however, they need to submit a separate copy for each scholarship with the name of that scholarship on it.

Q. Do I include the required references in my scholarship application or does my referee submit the reference separately?

A. References must be confidential and sent in separately, failing that, they need to be sent in a sealed envelope that has your referee's signature across the seal.

Academic Records

Q. You request that I include a ‘certified copy' of my academic records with my application. What is a certified copy?

A. A certified copy is a copy that has been certified by a solicitor, JP or School Principal that is a true copy of the original. The person certifying the document will have to sight the original document.

Q: What academic records do I need to include in my application?

A: You should include your Year 11 and Year 12 results. Universities New Zealand will receive your Year 13 NCEA and scholarship results directly from NZQA.

If you are sitting IB or Cambridge exams you need to send your results to Universities New Zealand as soon as you receive them.

Admission to Cambridge/Duke/UNC-Chapel Hill

Q. Do I need to apply separately to Cambridge if I am applying for a Universities New Zealand scholarship to study at Cambridge?

A. If your scholarship application is successful you won't need to have applied separately to Cambridge. Universities NZ will forward your application to Cambridge if you are short listed to attend a scholarship interview. However, if you want to gain admission to Cambridge even in the event that your scholarship application is unsuccessful, you will need to have applied separately to Cambridge and observe their application deadlines. Please note, if you apply directly to Cambridge and your application to Cambridge is rejected, you will not be eligible for a Universities New Zealand scholarship to Cambridge.

Q. Do I need to apply separately to Duke/UNC-Chapel Hill if I am applying for the Robertson Scholars Program?

A. If you are applying for the Robertson Scholars Program and your scholarship application is successful, then you can apply directly after you have been awarded the scholarship. However, if you want to apply to study at Duke / UNC-Chapel Hill even if your scholarship application is unsuccessful, you need to apply separately and observe their application deadlines.

Q. I am applying for the Robertson Scholars Program. Do I need to have sat the ACT / SAT tests?

A. Yes. You must take the ACT/SAT Standardized Test no later than 31 January in the year the award is to be taken up. For more information on these Tests, refer to the Fulbright website.

Q: When are the interviews held and what happens if I can't attend an interview?

A. The interviews are usually held in early March. Short listed applicants must attend an interview (and pre-interview dinner) if they wish to be considered for the scholarship. The scholarship will cover the cost of flights to / from the interview for travel within New Zealand.
