Freyberg Scholarship
(New Zealand Defence Scholarships)
This Scholarship has been paused, and is not open to applications, for the 2025 and 2026 rounds. The Ministry of Defence anticipates that funding will resume in 2027.
Freyberg Scholarships are awarded to encourage graduate study into areas relevant to national security. Study should be undertaken at a recognised institution in New Zealand or an Asia-Pacific country, including Canada and the United States.
It is appropriate that the name of the late Lord Freyberg is associated with this scholarship given his distinguished record in the New Zealand Armed Forces and his great contribution to New Zealand security.
Eligibility
Applicants must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents who meet the following academic requirements: they should normally have obtained at least second class honours, division A, or equivalent in their qualifying degree and have completed academic studies in political science, history, economics or some other discipline that may be considered an appropriate foundation for such study.
Value and number awarded
$50,000 per annum will be made available for the award of one or more scholarships.
Read the Regulations to confirm your eligibility to apply and to understand the scholarship.
